KNIGHTS Champions of Another Level Fall Blast 11/12U Division
The 11U Knights captured their first championship in the Another Level Fall Blast tournament. The Knights finished 3-1 for the tournament. In the first game, the Knights lost a close one to the Stealers. The next game was a good one against the Jayhawks but the Knights came out on top. The Knights beat the Horns in a forfeit and played the Jayhawks again. This one was a little closer but the Knights still finished on top. This set the stage for a rematch with the Stealers. The Knights fell behind early but clawed back but went into halftime down by 4 points. The trend continued until the Knights had some big shots by Malik, Malcolm and James to take a lead. The Knights then clamped down on defense forcing most of the Stealer scores to come at the freethrow line. The Stealers just would not go away and closed to 2 points. Sidney took over the game with a huge layup and some big assists. Brandon, James, and Josh made some key baskets inside to seal the win. The Knights fans were counting down the time as the tension built, but once the buzzer sounded, the Knights had won it and took home the trophy. This was the first time the Knights had beaten the Stealers although the last few times they played the games have been close. The Stealers are well coached and a good team, so the Knights showed real improvement by finally beating them. The Knights also continued their streak of wins over the Jayhawks. The win qualifies the Knights for the Another Level Sports national tournament to be held in San Antonio, Texas in July of 2007.
KNIGHTS go 2-0 in games in Another Level League
The 11U Knights played in some league games this weekend and won both. The Knights first played the Longhorns and started out a little slow and the game was tight the whole way. Then the Longhorns hit a few jumpers and opened up a 6 point lead. The Knights took a time out and went to a man to man defense that forced some turnovers and before you knew it, the Knights pulled away and took the first game. In the second game, the Longhorns got a rematch with the Knights. This time the Knights were ready from the start and the game was never close. Good post play lead the way with Brandon, James, Joshua and Elaina playing big and controlling the inside scoring. Guard play provided tough defense and forced a lot of turnovers. Guards Sidney, Nate, Malcolm, David, Michael, and newcomers Malik and Jo Jo really frustrated the Longhorn guards.
KNIGHTS holding tryouts for 5th grade boys select basketball team
The Knights are looking for a few players for their 5th grade boys basketball team. We need a point guard and a post. Post candidates should be over 5'3" tall. We are looking for players that want to take their game to the next level. Above average height is a plus as are good ball handling skills and court vision. Financial assistance is available to those in need. For tryout information, contact Coach Tony at 713-775-2461 or email at tmataya@yahoo.com.
KNIGHTS take 3rd Place in the Prime Time Qualifier in Humble, TX
The 11U Knights played in their first tournament the weekend of 9/23-9/24 in the 11/12U Prime Time Qualifier. All games were competitive and the Knights lost to the Houston Stealers by 11 points, the Rockets by 9 points and beat the Jayhawks by over 20 points. In the first game against the Stealers, the Knights jumped out to an early lead but the Stealers closed and the Knights led by 2 at the half. The game remained close with most of the Knights scoring coming from the posts, Brandon and Joshua Jones and James Taylor. The guards chipped in as well with Sidney Harris and Nate Nahirny running point and Malcolm White, Elaina Mataya, David Nyugen, and Michael Hegar contributing on defense and hitting some key shots. The Stealers took the lead late and scored some easy baskets in transition to pull away. Against the Rockets, the Knights again dominated the paint. Brandon Jones and James Harris scored early and dominated the boards and Elaina Mataya went for 10 points in the game, hitting her first career 3 pointer. David Nyugen hit a big three and two jumpers to help close the gap late. Guard play was strong but a few turnovers proved costly and the Rockets pulled away late with the Knights having to foul. In the game for 3rd place, the Knights started out with the lead and never gave it up. The Knights again got strong play in the post from Brandon, James, and Joshua with Malcolm and Elaina helping as well. Sidney and Malcom hit 3's and the Knights defense proved too strong for the Jayhawks as the Knights held them to a tournament low point total. Michael Hegar played some strong defense and came up with some big stops. Brandon Jones had to play most of the game and really came up big with some huge steals. Great job Knights in your first tournament! You represented well, playing up and working hard and brought back some hardware!
